Bio
Filippo Venturi is a research fellow in criminal law and legal theory at the Institute of Law, Politics and Development (DIRPOLIS) of the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa.
He graduated with honours in Law from the University of Pisa in 2019 and obtained a Diploma di Licenza (equivalent to a Master’s degree at II level) from the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies in 2020. In 2023 he obtained a PhD in Law cum laude at Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies with a dissertation titled ‘Regulatory criminal law. Criminalisation choices in the disciplinary strategies of the new regulatory state’. In this dissertation, he critically analysed the use of criminalisation as a regulatory tool of complex welfare state programmes.
He has extensively pursued research opportunities outside Italy, both as a student and a researcher. Notably, he served as Visiting PhD Researcher at the University of Toronto in 2022, Postdoctoral Visiting Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Crime, Security, and Law in Freiburg in 2024.
During the 2024-2025 academic year, he will be a Visiting Research Scholar at Columbia Law School. His research project at Columbia is supported by the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship, and he has been appointed as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar.
Research
Filippo has authored several academic articles published in both national Italian journals and international journals.
His main research interests include the general theory of criminal law, the philosophical foundations of criminal law, as well as crimmigration, environmental criminal law and corporate criminal law.
