Sant’Anna School moved to 9th place in the latest Times Higher Education rankings of the world’s top 10 young universities. The ranking published on 6 April 2017, lists the world’s 200 best universities that are 50 years old or younger, across 48 countries. Sant’Anna School has double reason to celebrate today: on February 14 it turned 30 years old and placed ninth in this year’s rankings (the 2017 ranking includes 200 universities expanded from 150 in 2016).

The Times Higher Education rankings use the same rigorous and demanding performance indicators as the overall World University Rankings. Young institutions (only Sant’Anna School and Scuola Normale Superiore appear in the top 10 list of young universities rankings) must be “dynamic and forward-looking”, demonstrate high standards of performance across teaching, research, citations, and publications in prestigious journals, international outlook and knowledge transfer. Times Higher Education editors say the ranking underlines the young universities’ innovation strategy to create positive social impact.

The Times Higher Education rankings are designed to make informed comparisons of universities. Institutions provide their institutional data for use in the rankings. Moving from data points to indicators, analysts are required to match values such as the date of foundation (under 50 years of age), the research output (1.000 papers published in 5 years), and the university’s ability to compete in a global market.

"It is undeniable that Sant'Anna School, founded 30 years ago, has witnessed a rapid growth. The remarkable performance in the Times Higher Education ranking showed that that Sant'Anna School was top of the international education rankings - said the rector Pierdomenico Perata. Professor Perata said the results reveal that our “competitors” worldwide are also performing strongly. Competitiveness has become a priority for universities and their main goal is to perform as highly as possible in measurable indicators. The Sant’Anna School’s success is due to the team work, the amount of scientific projects, publications, and contribution to scientific excellence. Sant’Anna School is determined to implement strategies for achieving academic excellence through attracting motivated and talented students and high qualified academics.

University rankings have shown more influence on positioning institutions in the international market. Recently, Scuola Normale and Sant’Anna School announced a formal partnership. We both are increasingly committed to scientific excellence to tackle the global challenges of the higher education system.

Sant’Anna School is honored to celebrate 30 years - said Pierdomenico Perata - this is a huge milestone for us. We look forward to many more years of providing high quality education to our community”.
