The call for Medical Sciences is articulated in two phases: two written tests and an oral test.

To be admitted to the first year, besides taking successfully both the written and the oral tests, candidates will have to be in the national ranking to access the Master Degree in Medicine and Surgery. Before it is mandatory to take the national test, with a score that is high enough to enroll in the University of Pisa. The specific requirements are defined in the ministerial decree that annually defines the modalities of access to the degree courses in Medicine and Surgery.

For the second and third year of Medical Sciences, candidates:

a) must be enrolled in a Master’s Degree Programme in Medicine or Surgery at an Italian or foreign University;

b) must have obtained an academic qualification (in 2022/23 and in the 2021/22 academic year respectively) granting them access to Degree courses at Italian Universities;

c) must be enrolled on the aforementioned Degree Course respectively in the 2023/2024 and 2022/2023 academic years;

d) must have achieved the minimum necessary university credits (CFU) required by the University of Pisa for the purpose of an incoming transfer, by the date of the oral admission test;

e) must have obtained an average score of no less than 27/30 in exams taken up to the date of their application.

1st year

Written tests

  1. Biology essay
  2. Essay chosen by the candidate between the following options: chemistry; physics

Oral test

A discussion on all subjects included in the written tests and an interview intended to assess a candidate’s motivation/disposition for the School’s programmes, their aptitude for their chosen subject area and for campus life.


2nd year

Written tests

  1. An essay on life sciences (issues concerning the relationship between medicine and biology)
  2. An essay chosen by the candidate between the following options: biology-genetics; chemistry-preparatory biochemistry; embryology-histology

Oral test

A discussion on all subjects included in the written test, solely for study programmes completed as part of the outgoing Degree Course, and an interview intended to assess a candidate’s motivation/disposition for the School’s programmes, their aptitude for their chosen subject area and for campus life.


3rd year

Written tests

  1. An essay on life sciences (issues relating to the relationship between medicine and biology)
  2. An essay chosen by the candidate from the following options: anatomy; biochemistry; physiology


Oral Test

A discussion on all subjects included in the written tests, solely for study programmes completed as part of the outgoing Degree Course, and an interview intended to assess a candidate’s motivation/disposition for the School’s programmes, their aptitude for their chosen subject area and for campus life.
